Historisch gesehen ist die Marke Oakley mit einem einzigartigen Material verbunden: dem Unobtainium. Dieser Begriff, der aus der Science-Fiction stammt, bezeichnet eine Art Gummi, der die besondere Eigenschaft hat, auch bei Nässe an der Haut zu haften. Aus dieser Entdeckung heraus stellte sich Jim Jannard Sportsonnenbrillen vor, die durch Schweiß nicht verrutschen. Das erste Modell, das Anfang der 1980er Jahre auf den Markt kam, war die O-Frame, die für den Motorradsport entwickelt wurde. Die folgenden Modelle machten bald vor allem in der Radsportwelt von sich reden. So wurde Greg Lemond, dreimaliger Tour-de-France-Sieger, einer der ersten Botschafter der Marke.
